Sinus Bradycardia is Leah’s third solo exhibition, revealing a deeper exploration into the realm of geometric abstraction, the non-objective, the monochrome. Like the slow heart beat after which the exhibition takes its name, a sense of calmness permeates the work. Materials, processes and the hand of the maker are quietly laid bare. A background and training as a contemporary jeweller informs the meticulous construction of these objects. Impossibly fine sheets of cherry and spruce from Japan and pieces of leather are used as one would employ paper in a collage. Certain work is made with materials collected on walks in the local environment, such as foraged wild clay and silt from the Merri Creek. Intense colour, texture and simple forms where materials speak for themselves blur the boundaries between sculpture, painting and drawing. These objects are non-representational, yet draw inspiration from the natural world stirring memories, feelings and associations within the beholder.
