Making and unmaking. It’s part of the process, the fabrication, crafting and construction of these small works. The physical work of unpicking and pulling them apart to correct mistakes and details that I am not happy with is time consuming and irritability inducing. Located somewhere between sculpture, collage and painting, their uniting characteristics include geometric abstraction, scale and materials. Using fine Japanese veneers found in Tokyo: cherry, spruce, buna and bird’s eye maple, each with it’s distinctive wood grain pattern, shift my thoughts to the trees from which they came. A single colour of ink or paint expresses itself in a completely different way on each variety, it is fascinating to me. When these works are on the wall the cantilevered edges create shadow and volume, drawing the eye in curiously in to investigate.
