Making and unmaking: all part of the process of the meticulous fabrication, construction and evolution of these small works. The physical work of unpicking and pulling them apart to rectify details is time consuming and sometimes irritability inducing. But I am patient. Located somewhere between sculpture, collage and painting, this series of work is characterised by scale and materials. Japanese wood veneers found in Tokyo: cherry, spruce, buna and bird’s eye maple. My thoughts shift to the once living trees from which they came, each distinctive grain pattern revealing a past trace of life. A single colour of ink or paint expresses itself in a remarkably different way on each variety, it is fascinating. Placed on the wall, the cantilevered edges create shadow and volume, drawing the eye in curiously in to investigate.
